[VLOG 115] I WISH EVERYONE KNEW THIS

How did you feel when you first woke up this morning? How do you feel most mornings? Is there a theme to your feelings?

A few years ago, I used to feel anxious and depressed every morning I woke up and it continued throughout the day. Day after day. Year after year. FOR SIX YEARS!!

I couldn’t escape it! I just figured ‘I was depressed’, that was me, and that was it.

And then I watched a video by a motivational speaker who said that depression is a state of mind and you can change your state.

“WHAT?”, I thought! “He can’t say that! What does he know?!”, I reacted angrily. I found myself defending my depression. ‘I am depressed and I can’t help it’, I’d tell myself.

But his idea stuck with me and over the next few days I started to ask: “Well what if depression is a state of mind and what if I can learn how to change my state?”.

Asking this question did something very powerful: it introduced doubt into my iron-clad conclusion that I AM DEPRESSED and I started to change how I framed ‘my depression’. I stopped calling it ‘my depression’ for one, as if it were some pet I had to protect. Instead I started saying ‘I feel depressed in this moment’, rather than ‘I am depressed’. If I only ‘feel’ depressed then maybe I can learn to feel another way.

Before I explain this let me tell you this: you can’t control how you feel when you first wake up or even in any given circumstance. You might feel depressed or anxious or scared.

The trick is to witness this. Just acknowledge how you feel but don’t stop there. Know that this is your first reaction and you can change this reaction by changing what you focus on and what you do.

If you continue to focus on everything that is going wrong in your life and continue to beat yourself up in your mind then you’re going to continue feeling that way. If, instead, you learn to change your focus then you can, in time, change how you feel.

What if, for example, you focused on what you do have rather than what you don’t have? What if, for example, you listed your achievements rather than your failures? What if, for example, you practiced a powerful affirmation rather than continued to beat yourself up?

If you can do this: if you can change what you focus on, you can change how you feel.

Press play to find out more! I explain it much better in the video!
