Three books you should read this year

Three books you should absolutely read this year

People ask me all the time for recommendatinos on further reading. I have read so many books and I’ve loved them all – they’ve all taught me something. However, if I had to pick three, these are the books I’d insist we all read this year.

They will change your life!

The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo

Description from Amazon: Every very few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. This is such a book – a magical fable about learning to listen to your heart, read the omens strewn along life’s path and, above, all follow your dreams. This is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who dreams of travelling the world in search of a worldly treasure as fabulous as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers, and from there into the Egyptian desert, where a fateful encounter with the alchemist awaits him. With Paulo Coelho’s visionary blend of spirituality, magical realism and folklore, “The Alchemist” is a story with the power to inspire nations and change people’s lives.

Impact on me: This book was the book that triggered massive change in me last year, to the point where I sold my recruitment business, moved to Manchester, downsized my marketing agency and launched DARETOGROW in a bid to find and live out my purpose in life.

Revolution by Russell Brand

Description from Amazon: We all know the system isn’t working. Our governments are corrupt and the opposing parties pointlessly similar. Our culture is filled with vacuity and pap, and we are told there’s nothing we can do – “it’s just the way things are”. In this book, Russell Brand hilariously lacerates the straw men and paper tigers of our conformist times and presents, with the help of experts as diverse as Thomas Piketty and George Orwell, a vision for a fairer, sexier society that’s fun and inclusive. You have been lied to, told there’s no alternative, no choice and that you don’t deserve any better. Brand destroys this illusory facade as amusingly and deftly as he annihilates Morning Joe anchors, Fox News fascists and BBC stalwarts. This book makes revolution not only possible, but inevitable and fun.

Impact on me: I am planning to read this book again this week! It blew my mind when I read it last year. Having flicked through the pages again this week I can see lots of references to source, the universe, love over ego and raising the global consciousness of the world that I just didn’t get before. This book helped me to see that you can’t always work within the confines of what exists to build your new world: sometimes, revolution is required.

Light is the New Black by Rebecca Campbell

Description from Amazon: Light Is the New Black is a guidebook for a new breed of women who are here to be bright lights in the world – modern-day lightworkers, who agreed to be here at this time in history. In order to thrive in this new age, everything we do must be an authentic expression of who we truly are. Light Is the New Black will guide you back home to the callings of your soul, so you can light up the world with your presence. Rebecca Campbell had her first awakening when she was a teenager, but without anyone to guide her, she ignored her soul’s callings and dimmed her light in order to fit in. Then, just before her 30th birthday, the life she had so consciously created began to crumble around her. It was as if the Universe turned off all the lights, so she had no choice but to rediscover her own. In this book, Rebecca shares her own journey, alongside practical tools to help you reconnect with the core of your being, and channelled messages from the Universe. Once you rediscover what you already know at soul level, you can offer the world something that only you can give.

Impact on me: When I read this book, I felt like Rebecca was talking to me; like she’s been in my head and knows my story too. It’s such a comforting book and it has prompted me to be more open about my intention to change the world by lighting that divine spark in each of us.
